"It's most likely worth noting that it costs more than you think. In this regard, it's an ideal match to the games that are coming out of Square Enix D2R Items. There might not be much to gain from other companies taking a similar approach to the concept," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately that doesn't stop Square Enix from releasing more games that are similar to this.
A remake of Live a Live is set to release exclusively for Nintendo Switch in July, and a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently in the process of being made. There are many other games that could benefit from the style, and it will be fascinating to learn which games Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. Although the company has evidently committed to this style of graphic, Asano went on to explain that there's no currently a "definitive book," and it will be evolving in each new game.
"We haven't created something like that. The way that it's presented differs for each film, meaning that the HD-2D style is different each time. In the case of Live A Live for example the setting in the prehistoric area will be different to the sci-fi scene.
Our options for expression have increased due to the novel ideas we've conceived. "While the cost may be prohibitive for certain developers, HD-2D certainly has worked as a selling point for a lot of gamers. We hope to see Square Enix find new ways to extend the style, for a lot more games to be released!
