As a result, the developer appears to be considering the nuclear approach OSRS Gold, stating that "we're contemplating in the near future to phase through the Duel Arena out of RuneScape completely." Until then the game will take "some temporary actions" to improve PvP "until our team of developers is able to release a major update that fully substitutes for the Duel Arena next year."
The rules will have a cap at the maximum amount GP or gold points, players can stake on the outcome of a game in the Duel Arena. Players can wager "no greater than fifty million GP per duel". Further measures have not been detailed as yet.
Jagex declares that "a brand new experience that'll form part of the Elder God Wars storyline" will replace Duel Arena in early 2022 however, no specifics have been released yet.
While the impact of these changes is yet to be evaluated but they are the most robust measures any studio has taken in order to protect against external misuse of its systems in pursuit of real-world money. If they are successful, similar steps could be seen across the MMO market in the near future.
